Photonics Finland has selected Nanocomp Oy Ltd as its Photonics Company of the Year 2025. The award was announced at the OPD2026 event currently underway in Jyväskylä, where the recognition is traditionally presented.
Recognition for Pioneering Work in Finnish Photonics
The selection highlighted Nanocomp’s sustained and pioneering contribution to the Finnish photonics industry. The company, which manufactures display technology for backlighting portable device screens, was recognised for its strong technological expertise, continuous innovation, and long-term commitment to advancing the field. The jury also noted the company’s new growth phase, its investments targeting international competitiveness, and the new production facility under construction in Joensuu – where a roof-raising ceremony was held earlier this week.
From University Spin-off to International Success
Nanocomp is one of Finland’s photonics success stories, originally spun out from the University of Eastern Finland. Research collaboration has played a central role in building the company’s innovative capacity and international growth over several decades.
A New Growth Phase
In recent years, the company has entered a new phase under new ownership. The pace of growth is reflected not only in revenue development but also in headcount, which grew by 30% in the past year alone. At the same time, Nanocomp is investing heavily in the future, including new production facilities in Joensuu’s GreenPark area. Nanocomp’s new growth phase, strong research foundation, and forward-looking investments make it an example of the international potential of Finnish photonics expertise.
